Understanding New Age Beliefs

 In order to understand the role of Dragons in the New Age, that system of beliefs needs to be explained first. For me, I think of the New Age religion as “Cosmic Humanism,” since the focus is on the self as being a part of the Cosmos. In the “New Age Journal (Winter 1988), Jonathan Adolph explains “What is the New Age?” “In its broadest sense, New Age thinking can be characterized as a form of utopianism, the desire to create a better society, a ‘New Age’ in which humanity lives in harmony with itself, nature, and the cosmos.”

 

There is a loose theology that permeates New Age writings (which includes channelings).

 

• All Is One.

The Law of One “expresses and acknowledges the interconnection, value, and interdependence of the spirit and consciousness that animates within all things.” That means that everything consists of the same reality. By achieving the unity of “One Consciousness,” everyone will be attuned to the powers of the Cosmic Force (God).

 

• Everyone(being) is evolving.

David Noebel, an acknowledged expert on Western religious tradition, defines “Cosmic Evolution” in “Understanding the Times,” a text book of Summit Ministries. “It is the progression of collective humanity toward an age of higher consciousness.” (Note 1) He continues, “Once collective higher consciousness is achieved, humanity will be at one with itself in collective Godhood.” In other words, people are ascending to Godhood by aligning with their Higher Selves. (Note 2) Then these Higher Selves will unify with others to become the Cosmic Force.

 

The process of this evolution according to the New Age is called Ascension. This is defined as “the raising of the personal vibrational frequency to unify with the Cosmic Force.” Nicola Hayley in “Introduction to Spirituality” defines Ascension as “increasing your spiritual vibration through personal healing and growth.” Shannon MacDonald in “Navigating Ascension Symptoms” defines the process of Ascension as “remembering the truth of who you are as you become liberated from the darkness and return to the light of your awakened awareness.” What this means is that a person’s Light Body (Note 3) will transmute into a Light Being (Higher Self). Then they will merge with the Cosmic Force. When everyone has reached Ascension, the New Golden Age will begin.

 

• The Supernatural is the Only Reality.

Since nothing is natural, all is supernatural. According to David Noebel, the ultimate reality of the New Age Religion is spiritual rather than material. According to New Age writings, everyone is a multidimensional spiritual being living on a physical plane. Therefore, reality consists of spiritual relationships.

 

• Every Person is God. Everything is God.

The God of the New Age is not a transcendent God but the “Cosmic Force” (Note 4). Humans will be attuned to the Cosmic Force by achieving the “Unity of Consciousness,” which comes through Ascension. Marilyn Ferguson (Note 5), who first wrote of the New Age in the 1980s, said “God is the organizing matrix we can experience but not tell, that which enlivens matter.”

 

• Reincarnation and Karma.

Every individual has a Soul Blueprint, which can be thought of as spiritual DNA. The Soul Blueprint is linked to the Akashic Records (also known as the Cosmic Library). These Records will decode the Karmic patterns of the soul’s journey, and offer insight to the soul (Note 2) for completing its Blueprint.

 

Within every reincarnation, each soul has a purpose to fulfill in its spiritual journey. Therefore, a soul will be born into a new body, after they have lived their current life. Souls reincarnate until they have learned their karmic lessons and finally complete their Soul Blueprint. Then the soul ascends to join the Cosmic Force.

 

Karma is the “Lesson Plan,” in which the soul makes choices during its various lives. Bad choices need to be reconciled with good ones for the scales to balance. Therefore, Karma can be thought of as “the effect that your thoughts and actions have on others and the future.” It could be thought of as the “grand balancing of the Cosmic Scales.”

 

• Everyone’s Truth is Different.

According to Nicola Hayley, “Everyone’s experiences is unique, everyone’s needs are different, and everyone’s path is something only they can truly define for themselves.” In other words, nobody has the “one true way.” Therefore, there is no definite agreement on anything, other than it comes from a “Higher Source.” That Source could be Extra-terrestrials, Dragons, Gods, or the Cosmic Source, Itself.

Note 1. Noebel equates “Higher Consciousness” of the New Age with “Godhood.” He defines “Higher Consciousness” as “the ever-increasing awareness of one’s spiritual essence and the underlying spiritual nature in all things.”

 

Note 2. The Higher Self is the divine aspect of the self that exists beyond the individual’s ego.

There is a hierarchy of “souls” or “selves” in New Age theology. In the hierarchy, the highest is the Oversoul, the Universal Spirit that unifies all beings. It is the connective point between multiple Higher Selves. Second is the Higher Self. The next is the Spirit, the Divine Spark of Consciousness that connects the person to the Collective Consciousness. Finally, the Soul is the individual essence that incarnates into a physical body.

 

Note 3. According to various traditions, the Light Body is a multi-layered, energy-based system that surrounds the physical body. This body forms the vibrational density that connects people to the Divine Source and their Higher Selves. The astral, emotional, etheric, mental and rainbow bodies are aspects of the Light Body.

 

Note 4: This is the Force that is referred to in the “Star Wars” movies.

 

Note 5. Marilyn Ferguson wrote “The Aquarian Conspiracy: Personal and Social Transformation in the 1980s (1980).” This book was the first to describe New Age Religion. The title of the book is based on a New Age belief that the Age of Aquarius, which follows the Age of Pisces, would bring forth a New Age of harmony, peace, and understanding. (The Age of Aquarius has already begun.)
