Planetary work is no fooling around, in my experience. The typical resource I use is Picatrix, but you need to pay close attention, as there's a lot of malevolent stuff in there, and it's booby-trapped (that is, there are things in there to deliberately mislead the unwary). Marsilio Ficino seems to have extracted most of the benefic stuff in his work. Strong stuff.

I tend to the regard the planets as sunthemata—real-life, material sigils/symbols that the god works through or is manifested through (much as the oak, etc., are sunthemata, which, coupled with the relevant written/carved sigil, create a sort of channel that aligns with the god).
