“Give Me A Word:” The Promise of an Ancient Practice

“Give Me A Word: The Promise of an Ancient Practice to Guide Your Year.” Christine Valters Paintner. 2025. Broadleaf Books.

During the Second and Fourth Centuries, the Desert Fathers and Mothers would be approached by seekers to ask for their advice on life matters. The Desert Fathers and Mothers would often offer a word or a phrase to mediate on. This practice was called “give me a word,” which promoted a deeper listening to God.

In her book, Valters Paintner tells how to practice “give me a word.” First, quiet the mind to allow for any whispers to reach below the surface of ordinary awareness. After finally receiving the word, spend the year meditating with it. Valters Paintner writes, “The ‘word’ was often a short phrase to nourish and challenge the receiver. A word was mean to be wrestled with and slowly grown into.” She explains further, “When a seeker went out to the wilderness to approach one of the ammas or abbas and said ‘Give me a word,’ they were not asking for a command or solution. They were opening their hearts to a communication which would slowly transform their lives.”

Valters Paintner calls the practice of listening for a word as “looking for what shimmers.” “Shimmering is a way to describe when something in the world is calling to you, beckoning you, sometimes even urging you to pay closer attention, sometimes what shimmers is challenging but we know that wrestling with it will yield something bigger in our lives. Sometimes what shimmers invokes wonder and awe.”

How does a person listen for a word? First, they need to cross the Threshold, the liminal spaces. The Threshold could be a place such as an altar, a doorway, or sacred site, where they can be attuned to the presence of the sacred. Or the Threshold can be a liminal time like dawn, dusk, the beginning or ending of a year, or certain holidays (Note 1). A place or time where eternity can be briefly touched.

Let the word choose you. Valters Paintner counsels that “give me a word” is a process of receiving and not striving. Reflect what has been life-giving and life-changing in your life. Sometimes the word will come in a dream or with an inner nudge. If the word feels “bristly,” ask yourself why. Explore the resistance and dissonance of this word, and feel it deeply. As you give the word space, feel it unfold. Test the word to see if it rings true to you.

Once having received the word, carry it with you. Apply the word in your life. Be creative: write prayers or poetry. Create a word-centered rule of life with an affirmation that includes the word. Let it foster creativity and wholesomeness in your life. Listen deeply to the nuances of the word that you are given.

I believe that this practice of “give me a word” could be adopted by Polytheists. It can be a practice that entails meditating on a word or an aspect associated with a God. This method of listening involves allowing for a greater wisdom to come forth within you.

For Polytheists, “give me a word” can be a method to use in developing a relationship with a God or discerning Who is calling to you. Listen and feel the God’s presence. When the word is received from Them, it can be felt deep within the body. With time, the word will ripen with deeper wisdom for the Polytheist.

An example of “give me a word” for Polytheists could be meditating on “good health.” This could be explored in multiple ways as there are many Gods of Health and Healing. For Romans, two are Salus, who is the Goddess of Public Health or Venus Cloacina, who is Venus, the Purifier. A meditation or deep listening could involve the differences between these two Goddesses or their common points. Also, a person could meditate on how to relate to each of these Goddesses. Or they could focus on one Goddess like Venus Cloacina and ponder purification and miasma. The word “good health” can be explored in multiple ways.

“Give me a word” can allow a Polytheist to test what seems to be coming from a God is true. It allows them to feel what is “right.” As Homer in “The Odyssey” wrote, “False dreams come to humans through the Gate of Ivory, true dreams come through the Gates of Horn.” (Note 2) The practice of “give me a word” allows the Gates of Horn to be open for true wisdom.

Sumer: Month of June-July

The month of mid-June to mid-July in Sumer is called “Su-numum” after the Akiti Su-numum (the Ploughing Festival). Ploughing has begun and will continue for four more months. This month is also referred to the “Month of the Barely Seed,” reflecting the preparation for the planting season. Stones and stubble are removed, and the rows are ploughed. Burnt offerings of fruit and oil are made to the plough. (Traditionally, the festival is started at the full moon after the summer solstice.)

Since Su-numun is also the onset of summer, there also rituals that focused on death and mourning. The first day of the month is “The Festival of the Canebrake (Apum).” (This was traditionally held on the new moon after the summer solstice.) “Canebrake” refers to the burial practice of wrapping the corpse in a shroud and laying it in the burial marshes. “In the reeds of Enki” refers to the canebrake receiving the body. Burial marshes were common. This was also the time of the Dead to wander among the living.

During this month, the Greater Wail (Ergula) was conducted. During the festival, it is customary to read laments such as “Lament over the Destruction of Ur” and “Lament over the Destruction of Ur and Sumer.” These laments were read while the priests and people walked around the city walls. The “Time of the Great Wailing” commemorates when Ur was destroyed by the Elam and Sua peoples in 2004 BCE. (Some scholars believe that the Greater Wail is also related to the moon being in the sky the shortest time on the shortest night.)

Babylonian Month of June-July

The fourth month of the Babylonian year is named for the God of Fertility and Shepherds. With the advent of the hot, dry season, the month of mid-June to mid-July is called “Dumuzi (Tammuz).” For this month of summer, Dumuzi goes to the Netherworld to live for six months. The months between June and September are the months that the Dead can roam among the living. This was the time of ghosts and rituals against prolonged illnesses.

On the 18th day of this month, the statue of Ishtar (Dumuzi’s wife) is washed, and Dumuzi’s one is anointed in oil. Starting on the 25th day, people honored his death. On the “Day of the Striking,” Dumuzi’s statue is displayed. During “The Day of the Screaming,” people wailed for Him. On “The Day He is caught,” barley is burned and his statue is thrown out the main gate. (This refers to the Galla coming from the Underworld to fetch the God.) On the “Day of the Stall (where He was captured),” Dumuzi’s statue lies in state. At this time, a priest whispers prayers into the statue’s ears. Then on the last day, “Day of Redemption,” the fields are cleared (the Dead Dumuzi). Afterwards, symbolic sowing of the fields for the next harvest is done (the Reborn Dumuzi).

At the Solstice, a ritual to adjust the imbalance between day and night is conducted. This was the time when the moon appeared at the shortest period during the night. The Daughters of the Esagil (the House of Day), Sillushtab and Katuna move to the Ezida (the House of the Night). Meanwhile the Daughters of the Night, Gazababa and Gunisurra go to the House of the Day to strengthen the night.

Roman Gods of the Month: June

June (Junius) is dedicated to Juno (Iuno), the Patroness of Women. It is unclear why Juno is honored by Romans at this time, since only Juno Moneta has a festival day in June. However, marriages in the last two weeks of June were considered especially blessed by this Goddess of Marriage.

However, the tradition of June being for Juno is murky. Ovid in “Fasti,” suggests that “Junius” (which means “junior”) referred to June since May (Maius) was from “Maiores,” (the elders). He also suggests that “Junius” could come from “Iungo” (“to join”) since this could be the month that the Romans and Sabines were united.

VESTA

The main focus of June is the Vestalia from June 7 to 15. The Inner Sanctum (Penus) of the Temple of Vesta, Goddess of the Hearth, was opened to women. The temple was cleaned, purified, and rededicated. (The rubbish was then into the Tiber River.) In the Roman religion, Vesta is the Perpetual Fire, Who keeps the Pact between the People and the Gods. (Her Eternal Flame was rekindled on March 1 by rubbing two sticks together.) Modern Romans will donate to homeless shelters or food banks in Vesta’s honor, as the Goddess of Homes.

HERCULES

I have a personal cultus to Hercules, who is considered to be one of the early founders of Rome. Some of the Greek mythology of Heracules was grafted onto Hercules, the Roman God Hero. However, Romans had their own particular myths about Him. For example, the focus of Hercules’ worship, the Ara Maxima (the Greatest Altar) is where He killed Cacus, the monster who terrorized the early Romans. He is also the God of Victory and Business Ventures.

Two temples of Hercules have dedications this month. Hercules Magno Custodi (the Great Custodian) has one on June 4, and Hercules Musarum (of the Muses) on June 29. The first was vowed on the orders of the Sibylline Books in light of Hannibal’s victories against Rome. The second was where poets and others would come to pay their respects to Hercules and the Muses. This temple featured Hercules playing the lyre to the Muses.

MATER MATUTA

On June 11, the Matralia is held. Single women and women in their first marriage (univira) offer prayers for their sisters’ children. Traditionally a slave was driven out of her temple in Rome.

MINERVA

Between June 13 and 15, the Lesser Quinquatria (Quinquartrus Minusculae) is held. Flute players (tibicines) dressed up in festive clothing. Wearing masks, they wandered about businesses, playing their instruments.

SUMMANUS

Another God that I have a cultus for is Summanus, the God of the Nocturnal Heavens. He ruled the night as Jupiter ruled the day. Summanus is one of the dii Novensiles (Nine Gods), who are ancient Etruscan Thunder Gods. (Thunder at nighttime came from Summanus.)

The temple for Summanus was dedicated on June 20, after He indicated He wanted a temple of his own by striking the temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus. On his festival day (June 20), people offered round breads imprinted with wheels. For Romans, the Summer Solstice was known as “The Day of Torches,” (dies lampadarum).

FORS FORTUNA

The popular Goddess Fors Fortuna has her festival on June 24. Traditionally, Romans would take flower-decked boats down the Tiber to her temple. It is customary to wear flowers and get roaring drunk on her feast day. (Fors Fortuna is the Goddess of Lucky Chance and is responsible for rags to riches stories.)

Astrology: Planets in Rulership, Fall

The Planets can be understood as having relationships between the various Cosmic Entities. Whether a Planet is in its Fall or Rulership is a matter of connections between that Sign and the Planet. Planets in Rulership are strong, since both the Sign and the Planet act as the clear expression for each other. Planets in Exaltation are honored guests, but are controlled by the Sign that they are in. Planets in Detriment can tolerate the energy of the Sign but are easily overwhelmed by it. Planets in Fall have no affinity between the Planet and the Sign. (A Fall is opposite of a Rulership.)

Please note that since Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered later, they do not have a traditional Sign associated with them. Modern Astrologers will assign them to Scorpio (Pluto), Aquarius (Uranus), and Pisces (Neptune). Also, these planets have been assigned Signs for Exaltation, Detriment, and Fall.

“The Inner Sky”: The Planets

In Astrology, the Planets (Note 1) can cause confusion or puzzlement for the amateur Astrologer. In “The Inner Sky,” Steven Forrest, noted Astrologer, explains how and what Planets do to affect an Horoscope. “For signs to touch us, an active force must be introduced. Some mediator must stand halfway between heaven and earth, translating celestial language into human terms…Planets do that. They ignite the system.” He continues, “It is the planets that touch us, not the signs. It is the planets that carry the zodiacal energies down to us…shaping our lives.”

How do the Planets work? What unseen energies arrive from the Planets to the Earth? People may not know what these energies are, but they can describe the effects from the Planets. Consider how the Moon affects the tides. Consider the madness that is usually reported around the Full Moon. This is called “going loony,” after Luna, the Roman Goddess of the Moon.

Forrest explains, “Planets are power lines that link us somehow to forces we do not yet understand. Each one is like a filter transmitting light, but also coloring it…When a planet passes through a sign it conducts something (emphasis Forrest) down to earth. But in so doing, the nature of that something (emphasis Forrest) is distorted. The planet affects it. Changes it. No planet, then, ever allows us to see a sign directly (emphasis Forrest).” He continues, “They traverse the signs at varying speeds, sometimes stopping, sometimes moving backward. Always they take the zodiacal light and focus (emphasis Forrest) it, training it down on the earth.”

In “Planets, Signs, and Houses,” Sara Shipman says that the planets represent, “the totality of your psyche.” The planets are “what you do.” They occupy a Sign, and express their energies as governed by that Sign. Meanwhile, the Sign represents the “how” the Planet will express its energies.

Therefore, all the Planets have relations with the Signs. As Forrest explains “When a planet lies in a sign whose how and why (emphasis Forrest) are especially alien to it, that planet is said to be in its fall. The sign of a planet’s fall is always opposed to the sign of its rulership. (emphasis Forrest) A Fall is opposed to the Sign of a planet’s rulership. For example, Saturn meshes well with Capricorn (its Rulership) and poorly in Cancer (its Fall).

Planets channel the expressions of the Signs. When a Planet goes retrograde (Note 2), it goes against the current of the Sign. Retrograde causes the Planet to move away from the current of the Sign. For instance, my Jupiter is retrograde in Taurus, which has me exploring my inner world. This gives me unusual perspectives.

Some Signs and Planet combinations can be more harmonious that others. Certain Planets facilitate the expression of certain Signs such Mars and Aries. (Note 3) Planets may complement each other like Venus and Jupiter (Note 4). Or the Planets may work against each other such as Saturn and Jupiter. And they can work against the Sign that they are in, such as Jupiter in Capricorn.

How this works is as follows. Venus governs relationships, however, that Planet is in its Fall in Virgo. In Virgo, Venus (“what”) develops idealized relations (“why”). “How” is through Virgo’s persistence and honesty. In Virgo, Venus loves dutifully and excessively, hence, causing the Planet to work hard for love.

Planets in Signs dance together, sometimes well, sometimes poorly. The Planet asks “what,” while the Sign develops the Planet’s “what” with “how” and “why.” The Sign’s current works on the Planet’s energies. Looking at a Planet in a Sign, the questions of “what,” “why,” and “how” are answered.

Note 1. In Astrology, the Planets are the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Forrest groups the Planets as follows – “Shaping the Self:” Sun and Moon. “The Inner Planets:” Mercury and Venus. “The Outer Planets:” Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. “The Invisible Planets:” Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Other Astrologers refer to Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto as the “Outer Planets” or “Generational Planets.”

Note 2. When the Earth in its orbit passes a Planet, that Planet will appear to stop and move backwards. Retrograde is when a Planet “goes backwards.” That Planet appears to stop and go, then changes course, and finally reverses itself. (Neither the Sun nor the Moon goes Retrograde.)

Stationary is when a Planet is ready to turn Retrograde or to resume their usual direction. When a Planet is Stationary, it turns up the volumes of the Sign of which the Planet is in,

Note 3. Mercury in Gemini and Mars in Aries have strong affinities with each other. These Planets are in the Signs of their Rulership.

Note 4. Jupiter enhances Venus’s desire for love. Jupiter with Venus is “Generosity and pleasure seem boundless.” Meanwhile, Jupiter with Saturn becomes “Reality’s hard lessons create order out of excess.” Saturn shuts down Jupiter’s expansiveness. Since Jupiter in Capricorn is in its Fall, Capricorn causes Jupiter to “expand excessively and confrontationally.”

Whale Gods of Oceania

In Hawai’i, the Humpback Whale is a divine messenger of the Gods. When They return to Hawai’i, during the winter, the Whales are coming home. Kohala (the Humpback Whale), as a sacred being, represents the cosmic balance. Moreover, He will intervene on the behalf of the Gods Kane and Kanaloa. The Hawai’ians say that the songs of the Whales are prayers to the Gods, stories of Creation, or information on where the fish are.

The Humpback Whale is often an ‘aumakua, a guide from the Ancestors. As a revered member of the family, the Whale guards the descendants. To thank the Whale, the family periodically holds rituals to show their deep respect. When a Whale approaches their boats, the family offers their prayers of gratitude for His Protection.

The Māori of New Zealand have deep relations with Right Whales. The Whales guided the ancestral canoes from Hawaiki to Aotearoa (New Zealand). One whale, Tutarakauika guided Waitaha who was following his sister Hahuru. The Maori have a saying – “Where the whale journeys, the people follow.” (Tere tohara, tere tangata.)

The Whale is also an Ancestor of several Māori families. The Tohora (Right Whale) are Guardians (Kaitiaki) of various families. For instance, a great whale (humpback whale) – Paikea – saved Kahutia Te Rangi from drowning. In gratitude, Te Rangi took on the name “Paikea.” His descendants live with the Whales in a sacred relationship of reciprocity.

Whale Gods of Asia and Oceana: Japan

Like Vietnam, Japan has whale shrines (Kujira Jinjya) and “Whale Gates” (Kujira Torii). These shrines are mounds of buried bones from whales. Each mound is marked with memorial stones. Towns, along the Japanese coasts, maintain whale graveyards (Kujira Haka) and whale monuments (Kujira Ishibumi). These shrines feature plaques with Buddhist prayers for the whale. Each prayer asks the Buddha to allow the Whale achieve sainthood. Later, the Japanese hold Buddhist services for the spirit of the Whale.

In Japan, a beached whale is an emissary of Ebisu, the God of Abundance. As One of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, Ebisu sends bountiful catches to the fishermen. Sometimes Ebisu is represented by the living Whale. However, the Whale God (Kujira Gami) is the Whale Himself.

In Seiyo City, which lies in the mountains of Japan, a massive whale “beached” there during the Great Tenpo Famine of 1837. This whale saved the people of the area from starving. In gratitude, the local villagers buried the whale, giving Him the posthumous Buddhist name of “The Great Whale Scholar of the Universe Who Brings Health.” (This particular custom is usually done only for great lords.)

For people who have harmed or hunted whales, the Bake-Kujira (the Ghost Whale) curses them. Also known as Hone Kujira (Bone Whale), the Bake-Kujira is a skeleton whale, who travels with an entourage of strange fish and birds. The Bake-Kujira, who is a baleen whale, brings fires and plagues to the areas harming the whales.

Whale Gods of Asia and Oceania: Vietnam: Ca Ong

Throughout Asia and Oceania, whales are regarded as spiritual deities. In Vietnam, the bones of whales are revered in Whale Temples. In Japan, the Ghost Whale seeks revenge against those who hunt whales. Meanwhile, the Hawai’ians regard humpback whales as sacred messengers from the Gods. (Only the royalty (ali’i) could wear the whale tooth necklace.) For the Māori of New Zealand, the right whale is their sacred kin.

In Vietnam, the warlord Nguyen Anh prayed for help during a massive storm. He was trying to escape from his enemies. In answer to his desperate plea, two giant whales saved his ship. Grateful, Nguyen Anh, who later became the emperor of unified Vietnam, called the Whale, “Ca Ong,” the Sacred God of the Sea. He, then, decreed that all Whales be worshiped as Gods by the Vietnamese.

Along the coast of Vietnam, each village keeps the bones of beached whales in their Whale Temples (Ong Temples). When a whale’s body washes ashore, the villagers give the Whale a ceremonial burial. During the first month and eight month of the Lunar New Year, various villages hold their festivals to honor the Whale. The Whale Worship Festival (Note 1) is to thank the Whale for His Benevolence. During the festival, they welcome the Whales, give thanks, make offerings, and pray for peace and calm seas.

If a whale strands on a village’s beach, the people feel blessed by Ca Ong (“Grandfather Fish”). Ca Ong guards both the fish and the fishermen. Through dreams, He warns them of impending typhoons. During times of high floods, the Whale protects the fishing boats. Since they respect all whales, the fishermen know that Ca Ong will bless them with a bountiful catch.

Mesopotamian Month of May/June

In the Standard Mesopotamian Calendar, the month starting from the new moon of May is called Simanu (“Month of the Brick Gods”). (Note 1) The King would lay the first brick in the brick mold. Then brickmaking and construction could begin in earnest. The Gods of Bricks and Building were honored in eight rituals that centered on the brick kilns.

The erecting of a building was re-enacting a moment of creation. It meant digging into the ground which marks the Earth. This foundation now retains a memory of the wild land. Therefore, before anything was done, divination (usually astrology) was done to find the particular time to build at a place. The rituals are done to link the place with that time. In “Creating Places of Power,” Nigel Pennick wrote “This link between this world and the other world preserved the holy moment within a limited, circumscribed area separated from the profane outerworld.”

For modern people, this can be the time to celebrate masonry and other aspects of building. Think of how bricks provide for safe and snug homes. The beginnings of civilization could be said to be represented by bricks and mortar.

For Romans, May (Maius) is sacred to Maia, the Goddess of the Growth of Living Things. As the Mother of Mercury, She is also honored with Him at the Mercuralia on May 15. On May 1st, Maia’s festival day and on the 15th, a priest of Vulcan (God of Fire) will sacrifice a pregnant sow to Her. May is also a gloomy month since the Dead roam freely at this time. The Lemuria is to ensure that the Dead are placated and do not trouble the living. Meanwhile, the Rosalia focused on placing roses and violets on graves.

The Days of the Dead

The major focus of this month is the Lemuria, the Roman Days of the Dead (May 9, 11, and 13). On these days, the Lemures (Larvae) seek out the living to have them give the Larvae proper burials. The Lemures also want people to make offerings in their memory to the Gods of the Dead. Meanwhile, the living do certain rites to ensure that Larvae not harm them or their families. (The Larvae could be considered the “Undead.”)

Until the 8th Century, May 13 was All Saints’ Day for Christians. During the 730s, Pope Gregory III changed the feast date to November 1. He wanted to accommodate the Celtic Christians, who had grown in numbers. Meanwhile, Roman Lemuria can be considered the Roman equivalent of Halloween, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day.

Mercury (Mercurius)

For Romans, Mercury is the God of Commerce, Merchants, and Thieves. On May 15, merchants would bless themselves and their wares from his sacred well, which was located outside of the Sacred Boundary (Pomerium) of Rome. Modern Roman Polytheists will use water from local streams to bless their local banks and stores.

Julius Caesar noted that Mercury was the most popular God in the Celtic and Germanic regions closest to Roman territories. These peoples regarded Mercury to be the inventor of the arts. In Celtic areas, He was frequently accompanied by Rosmerta, Celtic Goddess of Abundance and Prosperity.

Flora

On May 23, the Rosalia (dies rosationis (the day of the rose adornment)) is held. This was originally a military rite to honor the fallen. It later became a ritual to honor all the dead, with roses placed on graves. For the Rosalia, I would suggest going to a battlefield or military cemetery, if possible.

The Ambarvalia

At the end of May, people would walk the perimeters of their fields bringing offerings of milk, honey and wine. They drove their animals along the boundaries, beating the ground to stave off baneful influences. The the ancient Romans would herd a boar, ram, and a bull around the boundaries, and then sacrifice them. Modern Roman Polytheists offer meats from the store, and ask for the blessings of Mars and Ceres on the crops.

Black and Silver-White Dragons

Golden Christed Dragons

Lilac Fire Dragons

The Lilac Fire (Note 16) Dragons carry the Lilac Fire (which is a frequency of transcendent love and enlightenment from the Ninth Dimension) of the Cosmic Source. White-Gold Dragons

Fourth Dimension

Dragons at the Fourth Dimension delve into the deep dark vibrations (Note 1) that the higher beings of the Seventh Dimension cannot reach. These Dragons clear out the dark vibrations to bring forth harmony. As Elementals, they often befriend humans. In fact, these big-hearted Dragons are preparing humans for the Golden Age to come.

Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Dimensions

Christ Consciousness (Note 6) and Divine Wisdom: “Soul Councils, Star Governance.” At this Dimension, the individual joins a collective such as the “Galactic Akashic Keepers” or other Soul Councils. Collective Oversoul and Universal Consciousness: “Source Templates, Creator Consciousness.” Most planets will ascend to this Dimension and join The Shekinah, the Tenth Dimension Universe of Love and Joy. Since it develops the structure that exists at all levels, the Tenth Dimension is called the Template Plane.

The characteristic of this Dimension is complete unity with all, timelessness, and infinite love. After remembering Itself, the Source Intelligence moves into the Infinite.

Beyond the Twelfth Dimension.

The Thirteen, Fourteen, and Fifteen Dimensions are the Trans-Harmonic Universe (the Trinity of the Mother, Father, and Christed Son). The Thirteen Dimension is a cosmic threshold to the other Dimensions.

Mesopotamian Gods for April/May

In the Standard Mesopotamian Calendar (Note 1), the month beginning at the new moon of April is Ayaru. From Astrolabe B (Note 2), “The month Ayaru, the Pleiades, the Seven Gods (Sibitti) (Note 3), the opening up of the ground; the oxen are yoked; the land becomes arable; the ploughs washed; the month of heroic Ningirsu, the great ensi (priest) of Enlil.” This is the month that “the horned oxen march forth” in the Gusisu Festival of Ninurta.

In the Old Babylonian Calendar, it was called Ezem Gusisu because of the Gusisu Festival. Since this is the month of spring storms, the land is prepared for sowing. The Gusisu Festival is held at the full moon for three days. Ningirsu, who is the Warrior God, becomes Ninurta, the Farmer God. The Son of Enlil (the Keeper of the Tablets of Destiny), Ninurta brings the rains of spring. Before the inundation of the fields in May/June, irrigation ditches are repaired and filled. In addition, the oxen and ploughs are prepared for the spring farrowing. This festival was held for three days with the entire pantheon of Gods receiving offerings. (Note 4)

To honor Ninurta as Lord Plough and Master of the Fields, “The Debate Between the Hoe and the Plough” is read. (Note 5) This debate highlights the Hoe’s importance in civilization, since it builds the cities. Meanwhile, the Plough provides grain for the cities. Afterwards, a plough is symbolically used with the dropping of the first seed to be planted.

Then, the “Song of the Ploughing Oxen” is sung. This song depicts spring ploughing as the “faithful farmer with oxen.” One stanza is:

“My king, I want to praise the leading oxen of the plough:

‘Ellu! go, oxen, go, put the neck under the yoke,

go, royal oxen, go, put the neck under the yoke!

Step on the furrows of the fertile field, that the sides be made straight.

With your lion’s tail beat the sides of the plough,

Your step, oxen, rejoices the people, you have been given strength to work!

The oxen you guide, Lipit-Istar (the king), and your song is a pleasure.” (Note 6)

At the end of the Gusisu Festival, the plough and oxen are blessed. Then, a final praise hymn is sung:

“The Hero has performed his divine function.

Ningal, the servant of Enlil, let go of the plough and removed the yoke.

From that place the Gods depart to perform their routine duties.

Ninurta stands by the Ekurzagin (Note 7), head raised high,

And calls forth to his Father, the Great Mountain Enlil:

‘My Father, the divine functions of the month Gusisu have been completed; seed has touched the earth.’”

Late in the month, the Sacred Marriage of Nabu and Tasmetu is celebrated. (Note 8) This Marriage of these Gods ensures the fertility and abundance of the land. During the Sacred Marriage of Nabu (God of Wisdom and Abundant Harvest) with Tasmetu (Goddess of Listening and Sexual Attraction), their statues are placed together. As a Divine Couple, They come together as Bride and Groom. After spending six days and seven nights together, the two Gods are served a banquet by the king and the people. From this marriage will come peace and prosperity to the land.

Notes:

Note 1. The Babylonians had a lunar calendar, and added months beyond the 12-month year. They kept their year keyed to the equinoxes. Between 1750 – 1500 BCE, the Babylonians standardized their calendar – the Standard Mesopotamian Calendar to unify their empire.

Note 2. Astrolabe B has 12-month sectors with the rising of the stars. It lists the main events in the Babylonian Wheel of the Year.

Note 3. The Seven Gods, who are associated with the Pleiades, can be called to fight evil demons. (They are usually referred to as a group, not as individuals.)

Note 4. The first day’s offerings go to Enlil, Ninlil, Ninurta, and the Chair of Enlil. The second day’s offerings go to Ninlil, Nanna, Ninurta, Nintinugga, Ninhursag, Nuska, Inanna, Enki, Nisaba, and Ningagia. Also, to the Sacred Mound, Door of Enlil, “Abzu” (Pool) of Ninlil, the Plough, the Threshing Sled, the Harp, and the Chariot. The third day’s offerings are for Ninurta and the Plough.

Note 5. The Sumerians wrote debates (disputations) as a part of their theology to explain the relations between the Gods and humans. Seven are known – Bird and Fish, Copper and Silver, Millstone and Gulgul-stone, Hoe and Plough, Date Palm and Tamarisk (Tree and Reed), Winter and Summer, and Sheep and Grain.

Roman Gods for April 21-30

PALES

On April 21, the Parilia is held. Similar to the Celtic Beltane Festival, the Parilia focuses on the purification of sheep and shepherds. Sheep pens would be cleaned out and garlands hung on the gates. Bonfires are lit and sheep are driven through them. Grain and milk are offered to Pales of Shepherds and Sheep. For this festival, I pray for healthy livestock and put a stuffed sheep between two candles.

Pales is a mystery as to what They are – male or female, plural or singular. This/these ancient Roman God/s are from the time before the Romans were shepherds, which adds to the confusion of who Pales is/are. In “Fasti,” Ovid writes of a ritual to Pales.

“Make dark smoke with pure burning sulphur,

And let the sheep bleat, in contact with the smoke.

Burn male-olive wood, and pine, and juniper fronds,

And let scorched laurel crackle in the hearth.

Let a basket of millet keep the millet cakes company:

The rural goddess particularly loves that food.

Add meats, and a pail of her milk, and when the meat

Is cut, offer the warm milk, pray to sylvan Pales,

Saying: ‘Protect the cattle and masters alike:

And drive everything harmful from my stalls.”

(The Parilia is also considered the Founding Day of Rome.)

VENUS ERYCINA

At the Vinalia Prior (the Festival of Wine from the Last Year), the wine from autumn is opened and offered to Venus Erycina and Jupiter. (This is the first tasting of the new wine.) Originally from Eryx in Sicily, Venus Erycina became Romanized and associated with fertility. During the Vinalia on April 23, prostitutes would offer mint and myrtle to Her, as the Goddess of Prostitutes.

ROBIGUS (ROBIGO)

To save crops from wheat rust, the Romans sacrificed dogs to Robigus, the God of Wheat Rust during the Robigalia on April 25. Traditionally, red animals were offered at the boundary of Roman territory to ensure protection of the crops from mildew and blight. In “Fasti,” Ovid presents a prayer for Robigus.

“Your priest, Quirinus, pronounced these words:

‘Scaly Mildew, spare the blades of corn,

Let the crops grow, nurtured by favourable stars,

Until they’re ready for the sickle.

Your power’s not slight: the corn you blight

The grieving farmer gives up for lost.

Wind and showers don’t harm the wheat as much,

Nor gleaming frost that bleaches the yellow corn,

As when the sun heats the moist stalks:

Then, dreadful goddess, is the time of your wrath.

Spare us, I pray, take your blighted hands from the harvest,

And don’t harm the crop: it’s enough that you can harm.”

FLORA

The Floralia, honoring Flora, the Goddess of Flowering Plants, is held from April 27 to May 1. (Fauna, the Goddess of Wildlife, is her Sister.) Coming after the Robigalia, the Floralia affirms the safety of the growing plants from harm. During this time, people adorn themselves and their homes with flowers. They also wear colorful clothing to reflect the emerging flowers. Traditionally, goats and rabbits were set loose in the crowds, while priests threw lupines, bean flowers and vetch about. Roman Gods for April 1- 20

April for Romans is the time of opening buds. Flowers appear, trees come into leaf, and new crops are coming up. At this time, most of the festivals are centered on honoring the fertility of the land and protecting the crops. Ovid, in “Fasti,” explains why Venus is the tutelary Goddess of April, “She gave the crops and trees their first roots.”

Ovid writes in “Fasti” (Note 1)

“They say Spring was named from the open (apertum) season,

Because Spring opens (aperit) everything

And the sharp Frost-bound cold vanishes, and fertile soil’s revealed,

Though kind Venus sets her hand there and claims it.”

VENUS VERTICORDIA and FORTUNA VIRILIS

On April 1, the Veneralia is held. During this festival, women would go where the men are, usually the baths. There they would pray to Venus Verticordia (Venus, the Changer of Hearts) and Fortuna Virilis (Fortune the Bold) for support in their love lives. Later the festival included everyone, married and single, male and female asking these two Goddesses for help in matters of the heart.

CYBELE, the MAGNA MATER

To commemorate the arrival of Cybele, the Idaean Mother, in Rome, the Megalesia is held from April 4 to April 10. As the Magna Mater, Cybele saved Rome from Hannibal during the Second Punic War. During the Megalesia, theatrical shows and mutual banquets were held. On the last day, the Goddess was taken on a bier in a grand procession to the Circus Maximus. Because her priests, the Galli, were castrated men who dressed as women, many modern people regard Cybele as the Goddess of Transgender People.

CERES and TELLUS

From the 12th to the 19th, the Cerialia is held to honor Ceres, Goddess of Agriculture and Gain. The festival is to thank Ceres for the earth’s fertility. Many of the ceremonies of the Cerialia are held in private with the participants wearing white. An Ancient Roman tradition was to set loose foxes with burning torches tied to their tails. (It was believed to drive out diseases of the land.) For Ceres, I usually walk the nearby field three times and offer milk, a traditional offering.

During the Cerialia, the Fordicidia is held on April 15. In Ancient Rome, pregnant cows were sacrificed to Tellus, the Goddess of Productive Power of the Earth, for the fertility of the cattle and fields. The ashes of the unborn calves were burnt and use in the Parilia later in the month. Modern Romans will burn meat and mix it with soil as an offering to Tellus.

The Dragons’ Role in the New Age: Explaining the Dimensions: First to Eighth

The Dimensions of Consciousness

The first three Dimensions deal with the physical plane. The First Dimension is the Monad or Soul Plane where the individual is created. The Second Dimension is the Mental Plane where forms and shapes emerge. In the Third Dimension, the physical world becomes solid.

Physical Foundation: “The Seed of Matter.” This Dimension, “The Root”, is the foundation of all the other Dimensions. The elements of creation come into being there.

Biological Awareness: “Ecosystem of Life.” Now the foundation of creation becomes dynamic. Actions on this plane are guided by instinct instead of by thought.

Human Experience: “Intellectual Free Will.” This is the Dimension of ego, where individuals uncover the ability to think and to choose. Their identities are built on structure, logic, and separation.

The next two Dimensions focus on the Astral and Etheric Planes. The Fourth Dimension is the Plane of the Dream World. This Dimension serves as a bridge between the duality of the prior Dimensions and the unity of the following Dimensions. The Fifth Dimension, that of the Spiritual World, is the new way of being, that of Oneness.

Psychic and Astral Realms: “Gateway of Awakening.” This is the Dimension of the Astral Plane, where dream journeys occur. It is the home of the Astral Body, which consists of the emotional fields of the subconscious mind. Starting at this plane, which is the threshold of transition, consciousness becomes more fluid.

Unity of Higher Consciousness: “Heart of Oneness.” This plane is a quantum leap in consciousness from duality to unity. At this Dimension, individuals will experience interconnectedness with others (“Unity Consciousness”).

The Cosmic Planes are the Sixth through the Eleventh Dimensions.

The Sixth and Seventh Dimensions are for universal designs and archetypal patterns. Since the patterns of creation are created at these planes, they are considered to be the domain of the “Divine Architects.” These Dimensions are the last Dimensions that most Beings will experience. At this point, some individuals will evolve into Planets for others to inhabit.

Sacred Geometry and Templates: “Blueprints of Creation.” At this Dimension, individuals explore multiple time lines and designs. Here, they will uncover their Soul Blueprint (Note 2).

Divine Archetypes and the Collective Oversoul. (Note 3): “The Divine Will and Oversoul Consciousness.” This Dimension is thought of as the “Creative Source of the Universe, a space of pure potential, possibility, and inspiration.” At this plane, the individual encounters their Soul Families. (Note 4) Together, they merge with the Collective Oversoul.

At these higher Dimensions, a smaller percentage of Beings become Creators of the Cosmos.

Infinite Potential: “Galactic Mind and Unity Architecture.” The individuals, at this level, are co-creators of galaxies, working within the Councils of the Star Nations. (Note 5) To create galaxies, they refer to the Galactic Mind, a network of ancient awareness, a library of ancient memories. Ascension of planets occurs at this plane.

Note 2. Every individual has a Soul Blueprint, which can be thought of as spiritual DNA. The Soul Blueprint is linked to the Akashic Records (also known as the Cosmic Library). These Records will decode the Karmic patterns of the soul’s journey, and offer insight to the soul for completing its Blueprint.

Note 3. There is a hierarchy of “souls” or “selves” in New Age theology. In the hierarchy, the highest is the Oversoul, the Universal Spirit that unifies all beings. It is the connective point between multiple Higher Selves. Second is the Higher Self. The Higher Self is the divine aspect of the self that exists beyond the individual’s ego. The next is the Spirit, the Divine Spark of Consciousness that connects the person to the Collective Consciousness. Finally, the Soul is the individual essence that incarnates into a physical body.

Note 4. Soul Families are groups of souls. They travel through multiple incarnations together. The souls are connected by spiritual alignment and shared life missions. Soul Clans are large networks of Soul Families.

Note 5. A tenet of New Age beliefs is that humanity has Ancestors from advanced higher-frequency civilizations from various stars. The best-known Star Nations are Andromeda, Arcturus, Lyra, Orion, Sirius and the Pleiades.

The Dragons’ Role in the New Age: Explaining the Dimensions: Introduction

The Dimensions of the New Age are not the same as those of quantum physics. The New Age defines Dimensions as different states of reality or consciousness. Whereas in quantum physics, dimensions are mathematical constructs that define the behavior of matter and energy. These constructs include the properties of vibrating matter: period, amplitude, wavelength, and frequency.

Santhoshi in “The Ladder of Light,” refers to the Dimensions as the “Ladder of Dimensions – a vertical pathway of light – that connect mater to spirit, Earth to Cosmos.” Another definition for Dimensions is that they are a means of organizing different planes of existence by their rates of vibration. Every Dimension has its laws and rules that are specific to that plane.

Dimensions, in New Age theology, relate to the Ascension cycle. (Note 1) In fact, they outline a blueprint for individuals to evolve – unification with the Cosmic Source. Therefore, the Dimensions are a ladder to climb to the Cosmic Source. However, these planes are not stacked up like floors of a building. They are, instead, a web, with threads interweaving with other planes.

Most New Age writers claim that there are from nine to twenty-seven Dimensions. However, since New Age writers often think in terms of quantum physics, there are twelve Dimensions of note. The first four Dimensions, which are linear, vibrate at a lower frequency. The remainder, which are multi-dimensional, vibrate at higher levels.

According to New Age channelers, the Earth is transitioning to the Fifth and Sixth Dimensions. The Fourth Dimension, which includes Spacetime, is where the Earth is now. Meanwhile, in the Fifth Dimension, the physical world vibrates faster and holds higher frequencies. This is the Dimension of “Unity Consciousness,” the plane where individuals experience a sense of “oneness with all.”

Note 1. “Ascension” is defined as “the raising of the personal vibrational frequency to the Higher Self, which unifies with the Cosmic Force.” A person moves from having a Light Body to being a Light Being (Higher Self). The Higher Self is the divine aspect of the self that exists beyond the individual’s ego.

The Akitu (New Year’s Festival) of Mesopotamia

The Wheel of the Year in Mesopotamia starts at the Vernal Equinox. This is celebrated as zagmu, “the turning of the year.” (Note 1) At this time, the major festival of Akitu focuses on the Gods returning to their cities for the new year. Then, the Gods are re-installed as the leaders of each city. The spring harvest of barley is blessed. At the end of Akitu festival, the Gods determine the destiny of the people for the coming year.

The Akitu (New Year’s) Festival is one of the most complex and important ceremonies in Mesopotamia. Starting at the Spring Equinox, this festival continues for twelve days. It involves purification, the re-establishment of creation, and the re-affirmation of life, death, and the family. The rituals re-enforce the bonds of the community between the people, their Gods, and leaders. (In Ancient Mesopotamia, elaborate and lengthy rituals for the Akitu were conducted. Modern followers of the Mesopotamian Gods have a much simpler ceremony.)

During the Akitu, the God’s statue is taken on the Boat of Heaven to the Akitu house outside the city walls. (This is the house where the God resides when They are on the earth.) During the first three days, offerings are made at the Boat of Heaven and at the Akitu house – during daybreak, evening, and midnight. Afterwards, the statue of the God is taken through the city and welcomed.

Originally, the Akitu focused on Nanna-Suen, the Moon God. He is the God of Time, measuring the months by the waxing and waning of the moon. Later each city held the Akitu festival for their principal Gods. The Nippur Compendium lists the Gods for the Akitu (Note 2). According to Mark Cohen, Akitu festivals were celebrated at Uruk for Anu, Beltu-sa-Uruk, and Usur-amassa; at Babylon for Marduk and Nabu, at Nippur for Marduk, Ninurta, and Nanna-Sin.

The Ishtar Gate lists a ritual for modern Sumerian Polytheists to follow. The following is a summary:

Day before Akitu: Reflect on the past year.

Day 1. Remove the statues from your altar to a ceremonial Akitu-House.

Day 2. Make offerings at the Akitu-House. Reflect on the Gods in your life.

Day 3. Read the “Enuma Elish”

Day 4. Day of Atonement. Reflect on how to do better in the coming year.

Day 5. Clean your home, take a bath, and clean the altar.

Day 6. Praise the Gods. Read “Enki and the World Order.”

Day 7. Take statues back to the altar and make offerings.

Note 1. “Zagmu” translates to “the New Year” or “Spring.” It is believed that the term denoted the spring fruit, or the yield of the first month.

Babylon Month: March/April: New Year

The beginning of the Babylonian year starts at the Spring Equinox. (Note 1) This turning of the year is called zagmu, “the border of the year.” (Note 2) At this time, people take stock, review their personal affairs, and check their financial accounts. Then they affirm the Gods as the supreme authorities of the cosmos.

According to Assyrian Astrolabe B, Nisannu, the first month of the year is for Nanna (Sin), the God of the Moon. “The month Nisannu, the dais of Anua King is removed and a King is installed; a good start for Anu and Enlil; the month of Nanna-Suen, the first-born of Enlil.” An incantation from Nimrud reiterates this: “May the month Nisannu, (the month) of Anu and Enlil, absolve! The first month belonged to the First of the Gods.”

During Nisannu (the new moon after the equinox) the Akitu, the New Year Festival is held for twelve days. It starts with purifications, and then the “Enuma Elish” (the Babylonian Creation Epic) is read. This myth begins with the original creation of the world by Tiamat, the Goddess of Chaos, and Apsu, the God of Waters. Later Anu, a God from the succeeding generation becomes the “Father of the Gods.” Eventually, He cedes his powers to Enlil, from yet a newer generation of Gods, who seeks to overthrow the original Gods. After Enlil kills Apsu, Tiamat wages war on the newer Gods. In desperation, Enlil goes to Marduk, the principal deity of Babylon, for help. On the condition that He is made the Ruler of the Gods, Marduk agrees. After killing Tiamat, Marduk remakes the world from her body.

During the Akitu, Marduk disappears. While his and Nabu’s temples are being cleansed, the people search for Him. At this time, they carry the statues of the other Gods to Marduk’s temple. Meanwhile, Nabu, the Scribe of the Gods and Marduk’s Minister, searches for and then frees Marduk from the Underworld. Then in his temple, the priests re-enthroned Marduk as the Ruler of the Gods. Meanwhile to begin the growing season, the King would enact a sacred marriage with the temple priestess of Ishtar (Inanna). Their mating is to reaffirm the marriage of Ishtar, the Goddess of Fertility, with her husband, Tammuz (Dumuzi). These marriage rites ensure that the King is accepted as one of the Gods, and blessed by Ishtar, who also blesses the crops.

Note 1. The Babylonians had a lunar calendar, and added months beyond the 12-month year. They kept their year keyed to the equinoxes. Between 1750 - 1500 BCE, they standardized their calendar - the Standard Mesopotamian Calendar to unify their empire.

Note 2. “Zagmu” translates to “the New Year” or “Spring.” It is believed that the term denoted the spring fruit, or the yield of the first month.
